Tri Bike or Road Bike

What should I buy? Tri Bike or Road Bike

This isn't so much a debate it's more of a education behind the technology and focus for each bike. What makes a triathlon bike different then a typical road bike is that the geometry and the design is focused for flat, fast, straight riding. The tri bike geometry sets the rider at a much higher angle the steeper seat tube angle (74+ degrees) so they are more aerodynamic features and push you into a aerodynamic position over the aerobars. The tri-specific or time trial geometry is the most comfortable, aerodynamic and efficient position for long races since you will in the aerobars resting your elbows vs riding in your handle bars holding your self up with your shoulders. Do you need a tri bike? No! Any road bike can be used for triathlon and you will see a lot more road bikes in transition than tri or time trial specific bikes.

Which one do I choose? Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Do you want to race triathlons competitively, as in does every second count. - TRI bike
  • Are you going to do long-distance triathlons for more than a year - TRI bike
  • Are you new to the sport - Road bike
  • Commuting, touring, doing century or group rides - Road bike
  • Riding on hilly terrain - Road bike
  • Do you have an extra $2000 + burning in your pocket? - TRI bike ;)
